About us

My name is Melissa Stetser and I was born in raised in central Minnesota where I started very young as the local babysitter and eventually nanny. In 2003 I joined the Air Force and was sent off to Texas where I met my husband. I finished my schooling and was sent to South Dakota, stationed at Ellsworth AFB. In 2004 I was married to my Husband and we now have 2 wonderful little boys. My career in the military came to an end after an injury affected my ability to be a mechanic and I was medically separated. It was then that I started little bugs in January 2008 so that I could spend time with my boys and their friends. I am currently seeking a degree in business management with childhood development along with working towards my CDA certification. In my spare time you can find me spending time out doors with my family or cheering on the Rapid City Rush.

I truly feel that child care has to be a good fit for everyone, the child, parent and the provider and on this website you can find clarification on my philosophy and principles as well as the conditions under which I agree to provide care. If at any time questions or concerns arise, please feel free to contact me and discuss your concerns openly with me. Communication is key in a happy, healthy child care environment.

Philosophy

We will strive to provide a safe, comfortable, stimulating, fun and educational environment in my home with a semi-structured day plan. Activities will include free playtime and structured play time to include but not limited to language, math, science, arts, music and dance. At Little Bugs we try to create a "yes" environment where children are allowed to do more than they are not thus eliminating the need to continually tell them no. Our rules and guidelines create a safe and secure environment where children know what is expected of them and those expectations are appropriate for their developmental stage. We have a schedule to assist us through the day but allow for flexibility within that schedule to meet the needs of children in our care. We take part in the Child food program and can ensure you that children will be served wholesome meals and snacks daily from our pre planned menus. I do have a television in my child care area; however for the short time it is used we will only watch educational programs or activities which have been prescreened to be appropriate for even the youngest viewers in my care.

Through a mixture of guided and undirected creative play, children in our care will have the opportunity to learn about colors, shapes, textures, numbers, letters, animals, seasons, feelings, personal hygiene, manners and creative concepts such as “pretend play”, art, music and dance. We also have monthly lessons called "Little Bugs Learn" in which we go out into the community to help others so that we create a sense of pride in each of out Little Bugs.

All of these may sound like large goals for infants, toddlers and preschoolers but children can learn all of these things and more through creative play. We do not believe in pushing any child to learn at an accelerated rate, and will not make a child feel pressured to achieve any developmental milestones. By providing the right kind of safe environment, we believe that children will learn at their own appropriate pace.

Children are our future and everything we do now will in some way affect who they will be as adults. Let's give them the great experiences, opportunities and confidence to grow into well rounded, responsible young adults. I look forward to sharing some of those times with your child, and I believe in open communication, please feel free to discuss your child's needs, growth and development with me.
